What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis ("sor-eye-ah-sus") is a disease of the skin that causes your skin to become thick, itchy with silvery coverings-scales.Psoriasis develops usually on elbows, knees, scalp, face, hands but can occur almost anywhere on your body.

The cause of psoriasis is that something wrong with your immune system. This is the defense system of our body that keeps the bad guys out!

More specifically, to further understand what is psoriasis, imagine that there are some cells deep in your skin that come up normally to the surface. This happens in about a month in normal people. In people with psoriasis these cells seem to be in a hurry and rush up in about 10 days.
So the skin becomes thicker and develops the characteristics of psoriasis.
The disease lasts about a lifetime with ups and downs as far as the severity of symptoms is concerned.
Things that make it worse are infections, certain drugs, stress and deficiencies of your immune system.
Keep in mind that what is important about psoriasis is the fact that IT IS NOT contagious!

Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp Psoriasis is very common among people with psoriasis. At least 50% of psoriasis patients have it on their scalp too.
The gravity of scalp psoriasis varies both from person to person over time and for the same person over the course of time.
Scalp psoriasis can be really mild with not so thick scales that do not cause any problems. On the other hand it can progress to thick crusted lesions that can cover the whole scalp causing boldness. It can also grow beyond the hairline at the back of the neck or around the ears.
Treatment of scalp psoriasis is usually with locally applied agents such as tar products and salicylic acid. Topical steroids and UV light have also been used.
Like any other form of psoriasis, scalp psoriasis can persist for a long time or automatically go into remission.
